Selamat Datang ...

Kalimantan or Borneo is the place to explore. This island is the 3rd world's third largest island covering the area of 747,000 square kilometer and covered by one of the world's largest stretches of tropical rainforest through which flows tremendous mighty rivers which are the island's highway.

The Dayak Tribes, the indigenous people of
Kalimantan were some of the fierce head-hunters. Today, they are no longer collect grisly trophies; the men hunt with blowguns while the women weave baskets of rattans using age-old patterns and techniques or together hack their fields out of the jungle, burning the brush to provide nutrients to the poor soil.

The island is rich with many fascinating and endemic wildlife; the orangutans, proboscis monkeys, gibbons and species of monkeys, snakes including the three species of flying snakes, sun bears, 600 hundred species of birds including the hornbills which play an important role in the Dayak mythology.

The exotic plants includes the rare black orchids, carnivorous pitcher plants, 70 meter trees including the hardest wood in the rain forest "Iron Wood" and many more.

“Sungai Wain Balikpapan”

Just up the main road from the bustle of Balikpapan is a hidden treasure. With total about 8783 hectare  the Sungai Wain Protection Forest is untouched tropical forest, complete with sun bears, hornbills and giant long pythons, rhinoceros birds, and multi-biodiversity ecosystem that can be found in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. Sungai Wain is protected rainforest. Sungai Wain is a treasure unique to Balikpapan. What other municipality can boast a pristine jungle right on its doorstep? At Sungai Wain, people can learn about the complex forest ecosystem by seeing it for themselves. Like a giant natural filter, it transforms the wind and rain into clean air and water. The reserve lies entirely within the borders of Balikpapan on Kalimantan's east coast, but it seldom appears on maps of the area. Even city residents know little about it.

Its history as a reserve reaches back to 1934, when the Sultan of Kutai declared it a closed forest. Over the years it escaped the fate of most of Kalimantan's coastal forest, which was converted to farmland or parceled up into logging concessions. Today Sungai Wain still boasts a vast array of native plants and animals that is better known among international researchers than local residents. In addition to being a source of water, Sungai Wain is a source of wisdom. From it people can learn not only abo Perhaps the most valuable treasure hidden among the trees is water. Both the Wain and the Bugis rivers lie almost entirely within the protected forest. Every day those two watersheds produce millions of liters of clean, fresh water. In an area chronically short of fresh water and where seawater often contaminates wells, such a resource is very valuable indeed. at the interconnected lives of the forest creatures, but also the many threads that link those lives to ours.

International researchers are already studying the plants and animals. For example, Sungai Wain is the site of one of the first major studies of Asia's sun bears. Scientists appreciate both its stunning biodiversity and its easy access to Balikpapan. That short distance is a bonus for local people, too. With a strong commitment from the new guardians of the forest -- the government and residents of Balikpapan -- there is still time to protect the treasures of Sungai Wain. "Sungai Wain is a valuable asset for East Kalimantan, Balikpapan, "People should be proud that they have this resource.

"Kutai National Park

The almost 200,000 ha Kutai National Park lies in East Kalimantan province. The park has a stirring history. In the early seventies an area of 300,000 ha was protected and named the Kutai Game Reserve. This protection did not prevent that one third of the forest was cut in subsequent years. Trying to prevent a further decline the Kutai National Park was established in 1982. However, great wood fires destroyed 60% of the protected forests in 1982/1983. Nowadays the forest is recovering and Kutai National Park is certainly worth a visit. The main habitat in the park is primary and secondary tropical rainforest, although all habitats of East Kalimantan can be found. At the coast the vegetation consists of mangrove swamps, backed by freshwater swamp. Kerangas can also be found. There are a few lakes in the reserve: Danau Maau, Santan, Besar and Sirapan. Several species of primates and probably more than 80% of the bird species of Borneo can be seen.
